Legend

Located just east of the infamous Union Cemetery is Stepney Cemetery, know for its equally as famous white lady spirit and as the final resting place for Ed Warren, the demonologist and ghost hunter.

Stepney Cemetery (also known as Birdsey’s Plain Cemetery) was created in 1794 when it was donated by Noah and James Burr Jr. At the time there was only one tombstone in the field, that of Nathaniel Knapp, a Private from the American Revolutionary War who passed away in his 30’s in 1787. Through time, over 1,400 men and woman, many of whom where early settlers filled the plots of land within the cemetery. It is said that many of these spirits rose and began to haunt the grounds.

As fate would have it, Nathaniel is one of the spirits who likes to play with the cemetery guests. It is said that he likes to pull the hair of young woman who come to visit. Also, if you visit his grave and say the words “nathan, nathan, come and play” you will potentially feel his hand touch your shoulder.

The cemetery is also the home of the White Lady who travels back and forth between Stepney and Union Cemetery. She is a young woman who passed away in her mid to late 20’s during child birth. Her legend is the most told story of the cemetery and is know to be quite the prankster as well. She has been seen by hundreds of visitors and drivers by the graveyard. Her spirit is described as having long dark hair and wearing what looks like a white nightgown and bonnet.

The White Lady is usually sighted in the roadway along Route 59 at night. People driving have reported seeing the White Lady along the edge of the road or traveling through the graveyard (including cops who patrol the graveyard). One such incident in 1993 involved an off duty firefighter who when traveling home, hit the supposed woman, leaving a large dent in the front of his car. When he got out of the car to check on her there was nobody to be found.

The last spirit is that of Edward Warren, the infamous demonolgist and ghost hunter who dedicated his life to exploring the unknown. If you enter the cemeteries main entrance, head all the way to the right to visit the grave. Ed himself even has a ghost story. If you sit by the grave and say a prayer, then touch your right hand on the cross of the grave, it will turn very warm, a sign that Ed is blessing you. We thought at first that this was a joke when we heard it from locals, but when we tried this exact calling, we were not disappointed.

Visiting Warren’s grave would be interesting, but I have trouble believing either of the Warren’s would stay around after death. The only way I see Ed Warren’s spirit coming back, would be to greet his wife when she passes. As for visiting the cemetery. Each old grave is part of history, so I would need to camp out in the cemetery for a few days to visit each grave. I am co-founder of a paranormal group in Oklahoma, when we do investigate I don’t want stories “I WANT FACTS”. It’s not if there is a ghost, it’s why and who that is the most important. I live in one of those places where if something strange is not heard or seen, I actually would be worried (we don’t have many over night guest’s).

I wanted to visit this graveyard so bad because of its history and close proximity to Union Cemetery. Ed’s grave is very beautiful. We had to make sure we stopped to say a prayer. Just for laughs we touched the right side after saying the prayer and it really was warm! There was no sun that day and it has been raining earlier.

Incredible how much him and his wife accomplished in their lifetime.
