Legend

In one part of the city of Hudson, NY there is a street near the Claverack Creek called Spook Rock Road. Known today as a popular nature spot, the river has a much darker history than many know. Back in the 1600’s, the Mahican (today pronounced Mohican) native american tribe ruled the area. The chief (believed to be Chief Sachem) had a beautiful daughter who was his only prized possession. She was set to be married to a great warrior from a neighboring clan. However, she had fallen in love with another and couldn’t bear to live without him. The native princess and her lover ran away and took them south to the Claverack Creek. Tired from days of travel, the couple took a rest on a large boulder. At this point the sky’s began to darken and rain began to fall. By breaking the ancient traditions, they had angered Tharuhyawa:ku (the Sky-Holder God). The God used the extreme weather to raise the water level quickly, flooding the area and carrying the lovers to their death. Their bodies were never found. According to legend, the young princesses spirit haunts the area. Visitors commonly hear a low moaning, that of a woman, wailing out in pain. If the conditions are right and you visit the river late at night, you may also see the princess looking for her love. She is hoping that one day they will be reconnected and live together forever.
