Legend

Within a slim section of the Pachaug State Forest lies a road known as Hell Hollow Road. This road, infamous for it’s twists and curves holds a few surprising stories around one lady known as Maud. Maud was a young girl around the age of 2-3 who passed away due to diphtheria, an upper respiratory bacterial infection which plagued parts of Europe in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. While this is the common story, others say she died from chocking, smallpox, wolves, or the local natives. Either way, she was taken from the world at a young age.

As fate would have it, the family decided not to bury the girl with the family plots. Rather, they buried her in an grave closer to the home, in the woods near the road which is now called Hell Hollow Road. Originally marked by a cement cross, the grave was destroyed with time (or vandalism) and is now unmarked. Many visitors claim there is a second, more popular grave site nearby in the Cedar Swamp Cemetery, marked with a broken head stone inscribed Maud (1647-1654).

This legend has attracted many followers who have told stories of the paranormal events and curses which exist. Locals say that Mauds’ mother was a witch who practiced the dark arts and placed a protective curse on the child. When people near the vicinity of the grave mention her name, a curse is placed on them. Countless users have told us of their cars breaking down or ominous feelings.

Maud isn’t the only spirit which haunts the road. Tales speak of a native american girl who was hiking through the woods to collect some herbs when she was captured by British Soldiers. The men who had a hatred for the natives killed the girl slowly, scalping her alive. Her screams can still be heard if you travel the road on a quiet fall day. Hunters and hikers who travels the woods commonly hear these scream and know the legend and terrible fate which once took place.

Young teens who travel the road continue this day to speak of tales of scream and Maud curses. There are orbs and EVP’s, cold spots and strange lights. The road has an energy unlike any other. Take a drive for yourself, but don’t touch or disturb anything because you never know who will follow you home.

I went a few days ago to clear my head. I started to walk a path that seemed welcoming at first, until I came across a bunch of trees down. I still went on, near the pond there was a few big remains of something scattered around the woods in kind of distant spots. There was a fire pit there with clothes that were left behind. That was enough to freak me out enough to do the blue “safer “trail instead I could hear squirrels talking on both trails as well as birds. It was a beautiful place but I’d really like to hike the pond just not alone.

This place is really scary. I grew up around here and have found the grave site. I don’t get scared that easy either but this place does it for me. My whole family thinks this place is creepy too

As a lifelong resident of this area. This article is the most accurate that I’ve seen from the folklore. There is however another more creepier ending to the Maud legend where neighbors bound and burned her declaring the child a witch and the curse came from the girl.

I’d found the gravestone marked “Maud,” a number of years back. It was not off of Hell Hollow Road, but off of “Cedar Swamp Road”. It also was not in the Cedar Swamp Cemetery, but down a long path, and next to the remains of what looked like some small house foundation.

I’m glad you didn’t go with the “Maud was a witch” story, which has bothered me for years, and I’ve corrected many people about.

There was nothing particularly scary about her grave (which had sadly been broken,) nor the foundation, but I found it odd that as I walked down the path, there was a brighter area of the woods where there were smaller trees that were growing away from the path/light, rather than towards it. I suspect it was more due to the terrain than anything spooky though.

If anyone would like the true story, as well as photographic proof, plus the EXACT locations, feel free to contact me at 860-449-3521. I’ve personally researched this site for years now and have information literally no one else has. I’m interested in having a video done on this, to clear this up once and for all.

Does anyone have instructions for finding the supposed grave site? from what i understand it’s in the woods but hell hollow road is in the middle of a state forest so that bit of info doesn’t help much. I visited today and it was a very cool spot but i had no luck finding the grave. still a fun trip though! nothing overly spooky over there besides the cemetery but maybe i didn’t know what to look for.
