Legend

Helens Bridge is a small haunted byway that is located on Beaucatcher Mountain in Asheville, NC. The classic stone bridge was constructed as a roadway for the Zealandia Estate in 1909. The estate was created by politician John Evans Brown because he enjoyed nature and the view that the mountain provided. Brown passed away after only a few years; leaving the estate abandoned for the early 1900’s. It was sold to Philip S. Henry, an Australian who build Medieval type architecture structures on the land. This included a lot of stone work, such as the bridge itself.

Over time Henry passed away as well and left the property to his children. They maintained the land until the mid-1960’s. From that point, the estate became a museum until it was set to be demolished in order to build an interstate. However, historical activists had their way and much of the property still stands today; including the bridge. That’s where the real legend starts.

Helen’s Bridge

In the 1930’s a local Asheville woman whose name was Helen was starting a new chapter in her life. She was a mid-aged single mother in her late 30’s who just gave birth to a beautiful young girl. Due to a tragic cooking accident, Helen’s house caught fire one evening. She ran upstairs to grab her daughter, but fell unconscious from the smoke. Fire fighters reached both Helen and her daughter, pulling them out in the street to resuscitate her. They brought Helen back but could not save the young baby.

Helen awoke to the news that her child, her only reason to live, had perished. She instantly became heart broken. She spent the following week grieving over her loss. Eventually the pain became too much and she went into the woods, where she found the bridge and hanged herself. She remains attached to the bridge to this day, haunting those who visit her. When you visit (typically during the evening hours) you must call her name three times before she appears. While she wont appear for all visitors, she likes to make herself known by either calling out in a loud scream or influencing cars. This includes locking cars from the inside, draining batteries, and more.

Visitors say Helen is not an evil spirit, but rather one who just misses her daughter. She will remain at the bridge, playing with guests and remembering the day she lost her little one.

In March 2020 we drove under the bridge in broad daylight we stopped and were taking pictures and our radio came on suddenly. The song was Sweet Child of Mine “!!! That song came on from my iPhone without me selecting it through Bluetooth connection. We thought it was coincidental but after reading these comments we believe area is haunted.

Went there 9/12/20, three people in my group went on top of the bridge. It was around 8ish. They said her name three times, they didn’t hear anything or see anything. But they took pictures while saying her name. We got a very clear photo of this “sprit” I guess you would call it. You can clearly see it’s face. I wish I could post a picture. It was not friendly. It looked very evil. We had no car problems or anything. Just a very clear photo

I grew up in Asheville and moved away in 1993, as kids we always heard the stories even was asked to go a few times. But never ever will I go because sometimes spirits can attach to you and you then take them home and that’s something I believe and will never tamper with. Call me chicken shit. Lol

I thought this bridge lived up to it’s legend. On a foggy morning in August we saw an orb in a photo after we called her name

I have lived in Asheville all my life and have always heard the story of Helen’s Bridge. We even went up there as children just to see the bridge as a family trip. My mom always told me that there was a woman that owned the Seely castle and one day when her daughter was playing in the only room in the castle that was made of wood, it caught fire. When the woman found out that her daughter had died in the fire she began to feel depressed. When one day she hung herself on the bridge and that’s how the bridge got its name. We went to the book store multiple times looking up old stories of people seeing her ghost, saying she asked where her daughter was. I have always felt a spirit-like being there and around the castle gates on Town Mountain but when I noticed that both places were 1,700 meters apart I realized how or why would she hang herself so far away from home.

It was scarier before the city replaced the original wooden covered bridge with the cement bridge. The covered bridge was the stuff of nightmares. So creepy!!

That’s Not how I heard the story… We set up a bloody fake head the day before We took friends up there. We were told Helen killed herself because she couldn’t have the love of her life was married. She had an affair with him and was pregnant. When she told him he wouldn’t have her anymore so she went up there to kill herself and her unborn child by hanging herself. Anyway fast forward to the night we set up fake head to scare some friends. We hid it in some bushes, well when we took them up there, it was gone,,no whee in sight, all we heard was Screaming and crying
, we ran down that mountain so fast, Never returned….

We were their yrs. ago, when we left our car radio would come on all by itself, with the key off and radio turned off, than shut off by itself. I am a believer.

I went to college in Asheville and a bunch of us athletes went to Helen’s Bridge. It was super eye opening experience as when we approached the bridge we saw a white figure and even heard what sounded like screams as we walked under the bridge. We also parked at the bottom and walked up to prevent our cars from being tampered with but that resulted in us having to run down the hill to our cars when we got too spooked.

I work at Zealandia Castle and drive under this bridge everyday to go to work. Haven’t ever seen anything remotely scary. The historical significance is interesting, though.

Please don’t trespass on the bridge, it’s owned by the city now.

I live about 30 minutes away and I went up there a few times. Once with just 2 other people and again with a bunch of friends. When it was just us 3 I stayed in the car and something slammed down on the roof of the car and drug across till it got above where I was, the car we was in even has a dent from how hard it was. Went again after reading the legend about her daughter and a few of the other kids provoked her talking about her daughter. That’s when the fun started, ended up killing a car battery, 2 camera batterys and a cell phone. Heardd something walking on top of the bridge when we walked underneath it. And I got away with a pretty cool picture of what looks like a woman in the trees when it was only us 5 teenagers. Even the skeptical with us was ready to leave the place after. So definitely recommend going late at night.

Helen’s Bridge is one of the scariest places i’ve ever been too. We went in the dead of night last week and swore we saw things hanging from the bridge. Then we saw a white figure in the middle of the road. The temperature dropped to the point where we all froze even though it was summer.

I lived and grew up in Ashville. It was a tradition to go to the bridge and try and provoke Helen to appear. While she rarely did, she always messes with you car. I’ve seen over 7 dead batteries from visitors who visited the area. Strange noises also happen. We’ve heard blood curling screams come from nothing.
