Gray Road is one of those roads that you never believe in until you visit. It seems plain and ordinary, with two houses near the far end, and a set of train tracks in the middle. Its very short, but has a history which goes much further back.

The Cab Driver

On the night of August 9th, 1961, a 54 year old cab driver by the name of Frank F Coolidge was giving a young man, Garry Bernard Rhinehart a ride to the dense wooded area. At the time it was a lovers lane, so the cab driver assumed the young Rhinehart was meeting a special someone. As they turned on Gray Road, Garry pulled out a 22 caliber pistol and emptied the gun into Franks’ back. As Frank passed away, he hit the accelerator and launched the car into a side tree. Rhinehart fled the scene, hitchhiking back towards Syracuse leaving Coolidge who was found around midnight by locals.

The Woods

But the deaths do not end there. On Tuesday November 2, 1926, Ethel Guinup, who was only in her 20’s, committed suicide by hanging herself in a barn located in the woods[1]. She lived on nearby Snell road and after a confrontation with her husband; decided to end her life. Her spirit is still lost and looking for answers. Further legends talk about a young boy who was killed on the train tracks. Locals say that a family was driving their carriage over the tracks when they were hit by a train, injuring everyone, but killing a young 10 year old. Other common stories included a house fire which claimed the lives of 7 family members and other suicides/deaths which occurred.

In terms of hauntings on Gray Road, there are many things to watch out for. Firstly, they say that if you drive down the road near midnight and park the car by the tracks (now covered by the road) a little boy will appear. Secondly, there have been multiple sightings of strange light orbs and screams in the woods, assumed to be the souls of either the cab driver or the young woman who took her life.

I was walking with my friends on that road not even a week ago. It was around 1 am, and we were heading home. Me being a stupid teen, I ran for the train tracks and was goofing off. Then I turned around and saw a young boy around 10 or 11 staring at me. He wasn’t doing anything, just staring. I freaked out because I’ve heard stories about this road, so I ran as fast as possible until both my friend and I were on a different street.

My family lived on Gray Road for almost 40 years. I grew up wandering the woods and playing on the trails. BTW The trails were developed in the 19th century as carriage trails when the house next door was a Kingsford summer home. Gray Road was a notorious lovers lane . Knocks on the door by college students whose cars had broken down were so numerous that my father wanted to put a phone booth at the corner of our driveway. The man who discovered the dead cab driver used our phone to call the police to report what was initially thought to be an automobile accident. I used to walk the length of Gray Road by myself to have tea with the Gray sisters when I was a little girl. They lived in the little house next to the railroad tracks and W 5th St. The house is still there. In all those years on Gray Road I never saw nor heard of ghosts, orbs, strange sounds or any of the other paranormal occurrences reported on this site. It was just a wonderful playground for us kids. Also, Dan, yes it was a dirt road for all the years we lived there.

I grew up in Oswego. As a teenager and young adult my friends and I spent many nights trying to see some of the hauntings on Gray Road. The closest we got to scared was seeing the pond, that’s about halfway between Rt. 48 and 5th Street, look as though it was glowing.

One time my cousin and I took our sweetheart ladies for a midnight stroll down dusty old gray road. We made it halfway down the bend when we started to see red lights in the trees. After we made it to the train tracks one of the ladies started to have really bad gas and we just knew that we were in for it. She was ripping them so bad that all of the crows and bullfrogs in the woods scurried away.
People say that no life has been able to grow there since.
Oh, also my cousin got bit by a tick on the tip of his dingus and got Lymon disease.

Local tradition to go to the road with friends.. made the mistake of walking it at night for a shortcut since one of my friends lived on County route 25. It easily could’ve been a coyote, but heard screaming. Then one night when I was with a group of friends we decided to walk one of the trails.. didn’t make it very far without seeing orbs or having a generator go off.

I went to HS near Gray Road from ’96-’99 and we’d try to freak each other out driving on it. In wintertime I actually spun out on a curve and went into a snow bank. People on here are saying it was a dirt road. I don’t remember it that way. It wasn’t a dirt road in the mid to late 90’s, it was paved as far as I remember. Am I crazy?

I was on the road one after noon with my wife and two daughters. we were in the car and we stopped for a minute checking out the scenery and the river. as I started down the road again we seen this lady wearing a long old fashioned dress. she had 2 small children with her. I stopped and looked at her i was speechless, i just had this creepy feeling.she started walking toward the car. she had this big evil smile on her face with her head turned side ways. something told me to get out of there. thats exactly what i did. maybe 3 seconds later i thought to myself i was just being crazy and what if she needed help or a ride with her kids. i backed the car up and looked down the road and her and those 2 small kids were nowhere in sight. a while after that experience i saw the documentary on tv about the lady ghost of that road. shivers went through my body as i am telling this story and remembering my encounter. i will never forget that ladys face and the way she was looking at my daughter

We were on gray road around 4:30ish and it was our last stop on our ghost tour of the night. Until this point we hadnt really seen anything yet. We stopped on the railroad tracks facing gray road. We sat there for a while listening and looking around. First thing we noticed was the barn where that woman committed suicide, it was lit up brighter than bright. Next thing i noticed were voices comming from the right side of the woods. They were muffled and hard to make out. My stepsister Kayla hale was in the seat be hind me taking picture out the window and as she went to pull her hand in i saw her. The lady was all white and about a foot from touching Kayla but when she noticed i saw her she vanished. Next my mom saw some kind of dark shadowy person cross infront of the stop sign be hind us. I watched it after it crouched down and began to sway left to right across the road. At one point it saw me in my passenger side mirror and was swaying back and forth, not like anything ive seen before. At this point its epees were white and i could see part of its shadowy brown body. It had a pointed chin , square top part of its head with messy pointy hair. I thought well if i roll the window down i could get a better look at it. I only got the window down about 4in when its eyes went red as it began to dart toward my side of the car…thats when we all started to scream “go go go”. I could feel it was full of raging anger …my mom stepped on the gas but the car wouldnt move for a few seconds. Then we were able to finally speed off as it chased us to the first steep curve in the road. Later we went to fast track to talk about what happened and we saw 3 upside down tear dropped shapped finger marks on the back bumper….we all tried to replicate them but we couldnt….i would have to say in my 25 years on this earth that would defiantly be in my top 5 scariest experiences.

I just got home from this road. But I will tell you my experience. When we first arrived I got this horrible feeling like something was messed up. We did see anything at first so we turned around to go back the way we came and just sat on the tracks. We heard people talking I took a picture of the woods to see if there was anything there and I rolled my window back up and my step mother was seeing something in the mirrors and so we all decided to watch and see what she was seeing. We also dimmed our lights and playing with the lights to make it where we could see things better. Everyone else saw it but I couldn’t see it until we put the brake lights on so that is when I saw it. It was swaying it body then when my step sister opened her window it stopped dead in it’s track and looked right at us then my boyfriend screamed go and that’s when it started charging at us. That’s when I screamed go and I started crying because the can would go it acted like it did t have any power when we were trying to take off. But if you really want to get your pants scared off go to the road and sit on the track leave your car running and dim you lights.

Ive been here on this road a few times. its not real, i came one night around 3 in the morning, another time i came at like 10 and both times nothing happened. parked by the railroad tracks got out walked around stood there for aboit an hour, and heard nothing, seen nothing, most importantly lost time.

I’ve been down this road in the middle of the night…about thirteen years ago…it was fall and there was no pavement it was still a dirt road. I had some stupid friends who thought it would be fun to go up there and scare the s**t out of each other. The only thing I got was a gash on my right calf and an emergency trip to the hospital. NO ghosts, no spirits, no sprites, and nothing more than legend. I don’t have dreams about the night nor do I care to relive it. Note to anyone who wants to experience it, have fun. Just leave the dangerous so-called friends at home. Anyone who reads this and was there, you know who you are. C.T., J.S., M.K., M.B., T.M., and none other than yours truly. By the way, the screams weren’t of anyone other than me. When you’re cut and bleeding you kinda do that.

I grew up not too far, up until 5-10 years ago it was still a dirt road. Besides the two stories listed I was also told another intriguing tale. I was told long before there were railroad crossing signs a school bus headed back to the city was hit on the tracks killing some kids. Now if you were to park on the tracks and put the vehicle in neutral the kids spirits will push you across.

Back in the day I remember something allegedly about the ladies wearing hair pins in their hats. These suckers were long and sharp. The ladies used to ride the old trolley up there when going home. I would say the ladies from Minetto weren’t afraid of no ghosts. Chuckle, chuckles. More than like afraid of the living.

I grew up a quarter mile from gray road. I’ve walked the tracks. And I’ve experianced many unexplainable things on that road. Its an oswego right of passage to go down there late at night and experiance your own paranormal activities!
