Legend

Through December 11-15 in 1862, the battle of Fredericksburg took place at both Prospect Hill and Sunken Road.

The Fredericksburg battlefield in Virginia spans almost the entire downtown region. Since the river was primary source of supply delivery, the battles happened close to civilian homes. Prospect Hill was rather a place of operation for Stonewall Jackson’s defenses. As the battle raged on, union soldiers approached the hill. It was then nicknamed Dead Horse Hill, for how easy it was to aim and kill the union riders and their horses from so far up. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives during the battle and the ghosts still haunt the area.

Prospect Hill

The stone tape theory, developed in the 1970s, is explained as inanimate objects (like trees, stone, metal, and other materials) holding spiritual energy that was “recorded” during the time of amplified emotion.  A major Civil war battle would indeed inflict heightened emotion on the surroundings.

At the bottom of the hill, there are also train tracks that date back to 1848. Trains pass often, and give off massive amounts of energy to allow the spirits of the battlefield to manifest themselves. Though the battlefield is closed from sunset to sunrise, the grounds have an eerie feel to them during the day. Reports of residual gun shots are often spoken about and sounds of feet crunching the leaves behind you can be heard while along the trails in the nearby woods. Cries and metallic noises come from the forest in broad daylight while dogs play with people who aren’t there.

Prospect Hill

The pyramid monument was erected after the battle and stands to commemorate the battle of Fredericksburg and all who died on the grounds.

This battlefield certainly has some restless spirits and they don’t seem to be calming down.
