Legend

Located in Stowe, Vermont, Emily’s Bridge is not your ordinary crossing. The bridges true name is Gold Brook Bridge, although it is referred to as “Emilys Bridge” because of the ghostly hauntings by a young woman named Emily. She is the spirit that has been haunting the road for close to 45+ years.

Gold Brook Bridge was built in 1844 to as a crossing over the brook for horses, wagons, and coaches. Over the years it was upgraded as cars were invented and became more abundant. Through the early 1900’s rumors spread from time to time about a ghostly apparition that went by the name Emily. Her story didn’t become mainstream until an article was written by a local high school paper in 1968.

The paper as well as several other news articles told one of multiple stories to explain the supernatural activity. In one tale Emily as a young lover who met the man of her dreams. Sadly her lover was of a lower social status and her father would not approve of the marriage. They would frequent sneak out at night to converge under the bridge. After a year of sneaking around the two decided to to marry and run away to live further south. The boy’s father became aware of the plan and locked his son in his room. Emily waiting all night by the bridge but he never showed. She was heartbroken and devastated, unaware why he never arrived. Out of grief she hung herself from the rafters. Her lover did the same weeks later.

Another tales describes Emily as a young bride who was traveling to her wedding in the late 1800’s. She was riding on a white stallion when it became scared from the water below and began to buck up and down. Emily was thrown from the horse and landed on the rocks below. By the time the townsfolk found her, she was already dead.

A third story of Emilys Bridge came from the high school author who wrote the original 1968 paper. She claimed that the name was conjured during a ouija board session she held with her friend. While the spirits would not reveal how Emily died, they did confirm the existence of her spirit.

Strange Happenings

Many people who have visited the bridge have experienced paranormal activity. Visitors have reported scratch marks appearing on vehicles that were parked on the bridge as well as being touched or scratched by Emily’s ghost. Strange noises, EVP’s and footsteps are commonly heard/captured on the bridge. A few others claim to hear ropes tightening and a girl screaming.

If you are lucky you may even see the ghostly apparition of Emily herself. The most distinct paranormal events tend to take place between the hours of 9PM and 12AM.
