Annies Road is more commonly known as Riverview Drive in Totowa, NJ. Annie herself is a haunting commonly referred to as a “Woman in White”. These spirits are female ghosts reportedly seen in rural areas and associated with some local legend of tragedy. Common to many is the theme of losing or being betrayed by a loved one.

In the case of Annie, her tale surrounds the night of Prom. After a wonderful night together at the event, a young couple (Annie and her boyfriend) began to bicker at each other while traveling along Riverview Drive. Heading past Lackawanna Ave and further past the streetlight the fighting grew worse as the street grew darker. Eventually, Annie’s boyfriend became so infuriated that he kicked her out and left her on the side of the road. She was alone….lost.

Knowing she was close to Totowa Road on the other end, she began walking to find some help. On her right raged the Passaic River and on her left laid the Laurel Grove Cemetery. She began to see some bright lights and without warning was hit by a large pickup truck killing her instantly. Her dress became tangled in the car and she was dragged down the road shearing off her face.

After the incident, strange things began to occur. On an annual basis, a large red blood stain (actually paint) would appear on the road. This was rumored to be her father who wanted people to remember the tragic incident that took place. Since the road was repaved in the early 2000’s this has since stopped.

Annies Road Today

Many locals report various paranormal activity including electric failure: phones, cameras, and headlights on older cars. Some claim to see the young woman. As legend states, if a young man is to see her and stop, she will enter the car and seduce the young man to crash. Other legends call her a harbinger of death, that if you see her it means grave peril for either yourself or a close relative.

Other sightings include orbs, strange fog patterns, and screams that can be heard. While most of these incidents are associated with Annie there are a few skeptics who believe the true source of the hauntings is the cemetery which is home to countless potential lost souls.

Whatever you believe, Annie will be waiting for you, looking for her long lost love.

We used to go there when I was a teen in the mid to late 70’s. Her grave was built into a hillside and we used to go into it. They then locked the gate and greased the bars so we couldn’t do it anymore. Many nights I have been there and never saw anything but it was still some spooky fun. If you continue up the road there is a statue of an elk which was spooky against the moon lit sky. There are also some stairs in the cemetery (Laurel Grove) and if you sat on the 13th step with your girlfriend/boyfriend, she would appear to help you work out relationship problems. Never saw her there either but it was very fun times.

We used to pile in the car as teens and drive the road at night. Not the same with out the red “blood” in the road, but still a pretty creepy drive. As an adult, I had to get off the highway during a traffic jam, and knew I could take this road behind the highway (Rt46). It is still really dark, and the hair stood up on my neck the entire length of the road.

My dad lived in Totowa 4 a while, and he’d tell me the stories of Annie (he lived near the graveyard) so every year he’d look out the window looking 4 her. Also when I go to some Wendy’s u pass the road. I get damn near a panic attack when I see that turn into the darkness.

I went here in 2005 with two friends when we were 19 years old. We went around 12 at night and decided to drive back and forth down the road. We pulled out our phones and didn’t see anything strange.
Two days later my friend calls me and says that we caught Annie’s ghost on tape. You could see her walking to the cemetary. She was in a long nightgown and you see her facial characteristics.
I went again in 2006, visiting my friend at Montclair State. We went to Annie’s Road and started taking pictures. After we left, we went through our phones and my friend had a picture of fog coming out of the ground. The second picture she caught looked like a man coming out of fog. Then in the third picture, the man disappears with the fog still visible. The fourth picture, the fog is gone. This street is the real deal and it’s a scary place for sure.

This is true about strange things occuring on the road. It must have been back in July 2011 some friends and I went to a concert, after the concert I had to drop off a friend right behind the road, her house was next to the passiac river… so once i had dropped her off there’s an exit that leads u to the road and u would be exactly located cementary (left ) and River (right). As im driving down the road slowly becuase it was really dark and i was scared to be honest… now in the car the other girl was facing the glove compartment and inside the glove compartment was a gps device and it was turned off for a really long time. As im driving downt the road all of the sudden we hear the gps talking saying the following ” PLEASE TURN LEFT, PLEASE TURN LEFT ” then it stopped and it started again ” U HAVE ARRIVED AT YOUR DESTINATION” . As soon I heard this i turn to look at my left and the cementary is there and it came to me that this is where the gravestone of Annie is…. I pressed on the accelerator and drove so fast, my friend and I were shooked to the our very last nerve… we havent return to visit our other friend during the night time…

We drove down this road one Friday night to get a spook about 15 years back when the blood stain still existed. Around the last bend there was this thick fog that only covered a small portion of the road. We also stopped and looked into the cemetery and saw this woman walking through. We yelled to her, but she kept walking and disappeared.
This road is creeeepy!
